For Advanced Certificate programs:

  • a National Senior Certificate (NSC) from the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum English achievement rating of 3

For Diploma Courses:

  • a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as approved by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum success level of 3 in English and four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects.
  • programs leading to a bachelor’s degree
  • a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as recognized by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum English achievement rating of 3 and a minimum of four NSC 20-credit subjects selected from the NSC designated subject list receiving a minimum achievement rating of 4.


To obtain a higher certificate:

  • a Level 4 National Certificate (Vocational), at least half of which must be in English.
    For a diploma
  • a Level 4 National Certificate (Vocational) that meets the following conditions:
  • At least 60 percent in three required occupational subjects and at least 50 percent in three fundamental topics, including English, are required for a bachelor’s degree.
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with the basic qualifications listed below:
  • At least 60% in three core courses, including English; and 70% in four compulsory vocational topics chosen from the National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 curriculum.

Requirements for Postgraduate Diplomas

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree OR admission to the status of that degree OR achievement of a level of competence
    If HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met, some schools/colleges may accept an Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma.


  • A minimum of two semesters consecutively. Unless approved by the Senate, all modules must be completed at the University.


  • The curriculum will involve advanced methods of contemplation, practice, and study in the field of specialization, and it might even include a lengthy research project if it follows the College’s regulations that were authorized by the Senate.
    Requirements for Bachelor of Honours Degrees
  • a suitable Bachelor’s degree OR acceptance into the degree’s status OR
    reached a level of proficiency

Duration Coursework

Before the degree can be given, students must complete two consecutive semesters (full-time) or four consecutive semesters (part-time).
Periods of graduate study at another institution or College may be accepted with authorization and in accordance with College policies. (Consult with the appropriate school.)

  • Before the degree can be awarded, the student must have completed at least two consecutive full-time semesters or four consecutive part-time semesters.
  • Candidates must conduct a suitable program of study on a topic that is within the purview of the studies offered at the university. Students must also follow any additional requirements that may be set by their colleges or schools.
  • Doctor of philosophy or doctorate by research under the supervision
  • A degree that qualifies as a significant precondition OR admission to the degree’s status


  • Before the degree can be given, students must complete four consecutive semesters (full-time) or eight consecutive semesters (part-time).


  • Students will be expected to conduct an approved research program on a subject related to their studies at the University. Such a program must provide a distinct contribution to the subject’s knowledge or understanding and provide proof of originality demonstrated by the discovery of new facts or the exercise of autonomous critical power. Students must also follow any additional criteria imposed by colleges/schools.
