  • Dr. Christopher Peppler founded the seminary in 1996 and is a founding member of the National Association of Distance Education Organization in South Africa (NADEOSA). SATS is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and its qualifications are registered with the South African Department of Higher Education and Training, which is comparable in quality to regional accreditation in the United States. SATS has the authority to grant degrees up to the doctorate level and offers the following programs: undergraduate (Higher Certificate in Christian Life, Higher Certificate in Christian Counseling, Bachelor of Theology B.Th., Bachelor of Theology with a focus on Christian Counseling) and post-graduate (Master of Theology with a focus on Christian Counseling) (B.Th. Honours, Master of Divinity, M.Th., Ph.D. in Theology).
  • SATS is spiritually overseen by the elders of The Village Church, which was founded by Rosebank Union Church. The seminary’s theological perspective is generally evangelical. The South African Theological Seminary’s objective is to provide Bible-based, Christ-centered, Spirit-led distance education and training to Christians, particularly leaders, within their local church setting, in order to educate them to be Holy Spirit-empowered members of God’s household.

Theological Seminary Programs in South Africa

  • Christian Life Advanced Certificate (120 credits, NQF 5). The HCCL is comparable to the first year of a BTh. It is suitable for people looking for strong foundations in life and ministry. It also serves as a stepping stone into university education for students who do not meet the BTh entry standards.
Christian Counselling Advanced Certificate (120 credits, NQF 5). The HCCL is an extensive training program for lay and pastoral counselors.
Theology Bachelor’s Degree (360 credits, NQF 7). The BTh is a three-year theological degree. We currently offer a general BTh, which is appropriate for pastors, missionaries, and Bible instructors, as well as a Christian counseling specialism.
  • Honors Bachelor of Theology (360 credits, NQF 8). The BTh Hons is an entry-level postgraduate degree. It builds on a BTh and prepares students for MTh-level theological research.
  • Master of Divinity (240 credits, NQF 9) in the works. The MDiv is intended to satisfy the need for advanced pastoral training among pastors. The curriculum is excellent for second-career pastors because admission does not need previous theological training.
  • Theology Master (180 credits, NQF 9). The MTh is a research degree that allows you to specialize in a certain area of theological study. It is appropriate for people who want to teach theology and is the first step toward a Ph.D. in theology.
  • Philosophical doctorate (360 credits, NQF 10). The Ph.D. is a terminal degree.
